Frisco Sika Brno clinched their first victory of the EuroLeague Women season Wednesday night and knocked Wisla Can-Pack Krakow from the ranks of the unbeaten. Two of Europe's most promising youngsters, 20-year-old Alena Hanusová of the Czech Republic and Sweden's 19-year-old Farhiya Abdi, had huge games for Brno in a 70-65 triumph. Hanusová, a member of the Czechs' EuroBasket Women squad this summer, had 17 points and eight rebounds while Abdi poured in 16 points and corralled nine boards. In a close game from start to finish, Wisla went on top 58-56 with 6:43 to go when Erin Phillips buried a three-ball and took her points tally to 18. But Abdi answered with a jumper to knot the game. A pair of Tereza Peckova lay-ups sandwiched another drive by Hanusová to complete the 8-0 run that put Brno in front at 64-58. Jan Bobrosky's team kept their noses in front the rest of the way, although Wisla kept the contest close. A pair of Phillips free-throws reduced the deficit to 64-62 with 1:30 to play, however, Jasmine Thomas replied with a bucket for the hosts as they stayed on top. Peckova finished with 13 points and Thomas 11. Phillips had a game-high 22 points in defeat, and teammate Milka Bjelica had 16 rebounds to go with her 13 points. Brno are now 1-3 in Group C and Wisla are 3-1. |
