UNIQA-Euroleasing Sopron enjoyed a dream start to the 2011-12 EuroLeague Women with a 77-58 home thumping off Tarbes GB. Zsófia Fegyverneky, who has joined the club from Hungarian rivals Pecs, got her Sopron career off to a good beginning with 16 points, five assists and three steals. Twenty-year-old Serbian center Sara Krnjic also shone with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Krnjic sank all nine of her free-throws and also made four of her six shots from the floor. Norbert Székely's team never trailed in the game. Sopron took command with a 14-3 first-quarter run that gave them a 17-6 lead. Krnic had five points in that spurt. The hosts then hit Tarbes with another devastating run, outscoring the French 14-5 over the last 3:33 of the first half for a 42-22 lead. At the break, Krnic led the home side with 13 points and Fegyverneky had eight. A blowout then turned into a nightmare for Tarbes as Sopron went on an 8-2 run to stretch their advantage to 58-30 with 1:39 to play in the third quarter. The rest of the game was an exercise in damage limitation for Tarbes. They walked off the floor with a 19-point defeat. The French side finished with an assist-to-turnover ratio of nine to 23, and also shot a woeful 18 of 35 (51.4%) at the free-throw line. The 31-year-old French power forward Naura El Gargati had 18 points but she was just eight of 15 (53.3%) at the line. |
