Nine In A Row For Kosice

BASKETBALL IN EUROPE

12. Anna Jurcenkova (Good Angels Kosice)
Anna Jurcenkova has won every one of Good Angels Kosice's nine consecutive Slovakian league titles.

Good Angels Kosice came up short of the EuroLeague Women Final Eight but they once again had no equals in the Slovakian league.

The club has rolled to its ninth consecutive domestic title with a 3-0 win over MBK Ruzomberok in the play-offs.

One of the players on every one of the championship wins has been the 1.95m center, Anna Jurcenkova.

The 26-year-old, who will this summer try to help Slovakia qualify for the EuroBasket Women 2013 in France, has yet to confirm that she will return but most people expect her back in Kosice.

"About going abroad, I've talked about this before but in the end I'm celebrating again in Kosice," Jurcenkova said.

"And I do not regret it.

"As they say, never say never."

The temptation of going for 10 straight titles with Good Angels may be too great for Jurcenkova.

Winning championships never gets old for general manager Daniel Jendrichovsky.

"It is still a great joy," he said, "because the title is the objective, and I know how much our effort is worth."

So what can be expected of Good Angels next season?

They know they will have not be getting everyone back.

"Erin Lawless worked with us for four seasons but has agreed to join Dynamo Kursk on a contract that is much better than with us," Jendrichovsky said.

Another player heading to Russia is Natalia Vieru, a center who is returning to Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje.

The 22-year-old Vieru played so well this season, averaging 9.9 points and 7.9 rebounds in the EuroLeague, that she is a leading contender to fill the vacancy in Russia's Olympic squad created by the knee injury suffered by UMMC Ekaterinburg's Maria Stepanova at the EuroLeague Women Final Eight.

Good Angels are likely to lose Danielle McCray, who is thought to be joining Beretta-Famila Schio in Italy.

Injuries have led to 25-year-old point guard Jana Carnok√° deciding to retire.

Icelandic guard Helena Sverrisdóttir and Miljana Bojovic have agreed to return to Good Angels while Zuzana Zirkova has yet to announce her intentions.

Jendrichovsky has been excellent in unearthing new talents, particularly from the American collegiate ranks, so what is a foregone conclusion is that Kosice will once again be very competitive next season in the EuroLeague and the favorites to win in Slovakia.
