UMMC Ekaterinburg lowered the boom early and won convincingly against Lotos Gdynia in the EuroLeague Women on Wednesday. Sandrine Gruda had 15 points to lead UMMC's balanced attack in a 79-56 win in Russia. The Polish club led the Group A encounter only briefly in the opening minutes. UMMC, down 6-4, tied the game with Cappie Pondexter's tip-in and then went in front after Yelena Leuchanka sank two free-throws. Gdynia pulled level one last time as Aneika Henry's jumper made it 8-8. Olga Arteshina, Anete Jekabsone and Gruda answered with jump shots in a 6-0 spurt that put the Russian team in front to stay. Ekaterinburg had a vice-like grip on the contest at 35-18 after a 13-4 run that spanned the first six minutes of the second quarter. Algirdas Paulauskas' side ended up outscoring the visitors 24-11 in the frame for a commanding 46-25 lead at half-time Gydnia closed to within 13 in the third quarter but UMMC were never in danger of losing control of the game. Ekaterinburg out-rebounded Gdynia 45-30 and the home side also shot 48.4% from the floor compared to 31.3% for their opponents. UMMC improved to 6-2 with the victory and dropped Gdynia to 2-6. |
