Key Players Out For Good Angels, Nadezhda

Injuries are unwanted, yet inevitable.

Nadezhda and Good Angels Kosice have seen their squads receive injury blows in the build-up to the EuroLeague Women.

Zuzana Zirkova suffered a left knee injury that required an operation and will miss the entire EuroLeague Women campaign.

She could, if her rehabilitation goes well, return in five and a half months to play in the Slovakian league.

Meanwhile, Nadezhda's Russia international Liudmila Sapova hurt her Achilles tendon in a pre-season game at fellow EuroLeague Women outfit Cras Basket Taranto.

According to her club, Sapova went to Germany to have the injury examined by specialists but she, too, is expected to be out of action for several months.

The 27-year-old forward had blossomed this past season.

Earlier this summer, Sapova helped Russia win the gold medal at the EuroBasket Women in Poland.

Averaging 7.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, Sapova was versatile and explosive.

She erupted for 16 points in 25 minutes of Russia' Semi-Final triumph over the Czech Republic.

Sapova hit 10 of her 15 attempts from behind the arc in Poland.

Russian League Tips Off

Sparta&K, Nadezhda and UMMC Ekaterinburg got off to a winning starts in Russia's domestic competition.

Sparta&K got a game-high 20 points from Eugeniya Belyakova, one of their summer signings, in an 86-45 demolition of Energy Ivanovo.

The club has high hopes for reigning FIBA Europe Young Women's Player of the Year, Nika Baric of Slovenia.

She played 21 minutes and had five points and five assists.

Sparta&K also got an impressive game from 18-year-old power forward/center Ksenia Tikhonenko, who finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Defending champions UMMC Ekaterinburg, now coached by Lithuania national team boss Algirdas Paulauskas, rolled to a 93-45 victory over Spartak Noginsk.

France international Sandrine Gruda poured in 19 points for UMMC and newcomers Hana Horakova and Anete Jekabsone poured in 10 apiece.

Nadezhda got 20 points and 11 rebounds from Anastasiya Verameyenka in a 75-50 triumph over Spartak St Petersburg.

Augustus To Sparta&K Moscow Region Vidnoje

Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje will soon have a WNBA Finals MVP in their squad in the shape of Seimone Augustus.

33. Seimone Augustus (Galatasaray MP)
Seimone Augustus, who played for Galatasaray last season, will be returning to Europe after signing with Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje

The USA international led the Minnesota Lynx to a 3-0 sweep of the Atlanta Dream and Sparta&K say Augustus will join their team in time for the home EuroLeague Women game against Wisla Can-Pack Krakow on 19th October.

Sparta&K's veteran shooting guard Marina Karpunina looks unlikely to feature again this season after having a setback in her recovery from a cruciate knee ligament injury that kept out of the 2010-11 campaign.

Fenerbahce Fall To VICI Aistes

Vici Aistes enjoyed steady improvement last season in the EuroLeague Women and had some big wins.

They have given their fans plenty of cause for hope ahead of the new season with a 73-70 victory over Turkish championship Fenerbahce in the Botas Cup 8.

Lithuania international Sandra Linkevičienė had 15 points for the winners.

Fenerbahce will soon have Penny Taylor in their line-up.

The Australian passed her medical at the weekend.

Last week, Galatasaray prevailed in the GS Store Tournament after claiming wins over Cras Basket Taranto, Istanbul University and Nadezhda.

In the last game, former Perfumerias Avenida guard Alba Torrens had 15 points in a 72-68 triumph over Nadezhda.

Poland- Lotos Gdynia Bounce Back

Javier Fort's Lotos Gdynia hit back from their season-opening defeat to Wisla Can-Pack Krakow with two straight wins.

The team clinched a 85-57 victory over LKS Lodz in midweek and followed that up with an 88-51 win at MUKS Poznan.

Wisla, meanwhile, continued to play well with triumphs overs INEA AZS Poznan (75-41) and Energa Torun (86-77).

A EuroLeague Women team to keep an eye on is CCC Polkowice.

8. Isabel Sanchez (Perfumerias Avenida)
Another day, another SuperCup for Isabel Sanchez and Perfumerias Avenida

The team that now has Evina Maltsi of Greece and Iva Perovanovic of Montenegro won for the third time on Saturday, 69-50, over Pruszkow.

Spain - Avenida Super Again

On Sunday in Spain, last season's Liga Femenina champions Perfumerias Avenida won their second SuperCup Women in the space of five days.

After beating Elitzur Ramla in a battle of EuroLeague Women champions v EuroCup Women winners, Perfumerias returned to the court and defeated Rivas Ecopolis in the Spanish SuperCup Women, 77-65.

DeWanna Bonner, the former Rivas player, had 29 points for Avenida against her former team while Marta Xargay weighed in with 15.

Essence Carson, having only joined Rivas earlier in the week, led her side with 15 points.

Rivas played in the game after prevailing in last season's Copa de la Reina.

The Liga Femenina campaign tips off on Saturday with all three of the country's EuroLeague Women sides in action.

Defending European champions Perfumerias Avenida will host Mann Filter Zaragoza while Rivas Ecopolis will be at home against Burgos.

Ros Casares, who last week beat a travelling United States international team that had rising star Brittney Griner in the squad, will be at home to take on Girona.
